Food and Clothes – Clause 1

Put together a collection of recipes that are low-cost and nutritious. Prepare, cook and serve one of the recipes.

Buying food for the week can be expensive, whether you live alone or have a family, but there are lots of great recipes out there that don’t cost a lot to make. Why not challenge yourself to make this recipe book and find lots of great tasting recipes to put into it.

To start yourself off, try the one below - it’s really easy to make and super tasty to eat.

Recipe Book

You will need: 1 sheet of A4 Red or Green card, pepper template (can be found online), pencil, scissors, hole punch, ribbon, 10 pieces of A5 white paper. Gel pens.

  • Draw around the pepper template onto the colour card you have chosen twice and cut out. These will form the front and back cover of your recipe book.
  • Next draw round the template onto the white paper 10 times and cut out to form the pages of the book.
  • Place the coloured card at the front and back of the book. Hole punch the left hand side of the card and paper, before threading the ribbon through to hold the pages together. Try not to tie the ribbon too tightly as you will want to open the book flat to be able to follow the recipes.
  • Research some low-cost recipes and fill them into the pages – these can be meals for one or meals you can cook for your family or friends. If you find more than ten that you like, you can always add more pages.

Top Tip: Once you have written out your recipes you could laminate them or cover them in sticky-back plastic to help make them last longer.

Macaroni Ham 'n' Cheese

You will need: oven, large saucepan, small saucepan, knife, colander, ovenproof dish, scales, wooden spoon, oven gloves.

200g macaroni

Salt and pepper

100g sandwich ham cut into small squares

350g broccoli florets

340g can sweetcorn, drained

40g butter

40g plain flour

600ml semi-skimmed milk, warmed

1tsp English mustard (optional)

175g strong Cheddar cheese, grated

  • Heat the oven to 200°C, gas 6. Cook the macaroni in a large pan of salted water for 5 mins. Cut the broccoli into small florets add to the pan and cook for a further 3 mins until the macaroni and broccoli are just tender. Drain, and turn into the ovenproof dish.
  • To make the sauce: melt the butter in a pan, stir in the flour and cook, stirring over a medium heat for 1 min.
  • Remove from the heat and gradually add the milk, stirring well after each addition. Return to the heat and bring to the boil. Continue stirring until the sauce thickens.
  • Remove from the heat again, and add the mustard if using and season with salt and pepper.
  • Add 130g of the cheese and stir until it has melted into the sauce.
  • Add the sweetcorn and ham to the dish and stir through the sauce.
  • Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top, then bake in the oven for 20 minutes until the sauce is bubbling and the top is golden.

Take care when removing the dish from the oven as it will be extremely hot.
