In The Home – Clause 5

Clean three rooms in your home that require different cleaning methods, eg kitchen, bathroom, bedroom. Understand any safety issues relating to the cleaning products you used.

How well do store-bought cleaning products match up to homemade ones? Why not try this experiment to see which stain removers actually removes stains the best?

You will need: An old t-shirt or tea-towel cut into 3 pieces, washing machine, sponge, permanent marker, brand stain remover, value or budget priced stain remover, White vinegar, liquid laundry detergent, water, ketchup, dirt, coffee.

Homemade Laundry Stain Treatment ingredients:

240ml white vinegar

60ml liquid laundry detergent

60ml cup water

  • Cut an old t-shirt or tea towel into 3 separate pieces and number 1 to 3 with a permanent marker. Label the different stain removers 1 to 3.
  • Apply the 3 different stain inducing products to each piece, such as dirt, ketchup and coffee. Allow these to sit for approximately an hour. Rub with a damp sponge to remove as much of the stain as possible. (As you would if you'd spilt it on yourself!)
  • Mix the ingredients for the homemade laundry stain treatment together and pour into an empty spray bottle. Using one piece of fabric per stain remover, spray over the stains and let them soak in for about 10 minutes.
  • Place the clothes into your washing machine and set to normal 30° wash. Once the cycle has finished, hang up to dry. Place the 3 pieces together and compare the results. Which remover worked best? Why do you think this was?

At your next unit meeting, explain what you found to your Leader and what safety issues could be related to the cleaning products you used.
